This fundraising performance will enable the team to perform in the CHINA-ASEAN Theatre Week in September 2015.
Pearls for the Picking is a performance of 3 stories inspired by real life stories and experiences of people living and working in George Town. The stories – “Kanineh”, “Sampah” and “Legacy” are performed using devised text, movement and sound in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin to depict fictionalized accounts of 3 individuals’ lives and their relationships with the city. The stories were collected by the performers themselves.
Chee Sek Thim has been actively involved in the Kuala Lumpur theatre scene since 1991, initially as a dancer with Marion D’Cruz and Dancers, and then as an actor and director. Amongst his directorial projects are Leow Puay Tin’s contemporary performance text A Modern Woman Called Ang Tau Mui in 2011 and Johan Othman’s contemporary opera Conference of the Birds in 2009. He was Artistic Director for River Meets Light- a multi-disciplinary visual presentation produced by Ombak- Ombak ARTStudio for the George Town Festival 2011.
Holding a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University Of Notre Dame, Sek Thim has also been active in the Kuala Lumpur visual arts community for many years. He has taught in various art colleges in Kuala Lumpur, and founded and managed Reka Art Space in Kuala Lumpur from 2003 to 2007. Sek Thim is currently based in Penang where he continues with his work in the arts.
Nur Hilyati Ramli is a Production Manager / Academy Facilitator at Performing Arts Centre of Penang, currently pursuing a Masters degree at University Sains Malaysia on Aborigine ritual performance. Since 2004 she has been involved in many aspects of the performing arts such as acting, directing, dancing, stage management, lecturing and art research. She has been a volunteer in children’s workshop performances and children’s performing arts classes in Penang, under the Ombak-Ombak ARTStudio, Anak-Anak Kota and Performing Art Centre of Penang (penangpac) since 2010.
Lim Sheh Torng, is a graphic designer, dancer and actress. She also teaches physical movement. Her foray into theatre began when she was selected as one of the 10 finalists of the Digi Celebriteens Award in 2006. Since then, she has participated in several Chinese television and theatre productions which includeYes, Sir!, Ah Fu and Virginal Warrior. She was awarded the best actress in Short + Sweet Malaysia 2012 –a short play festival that showcases aspiring talents. She also directed a play in Mandarin titled Eighteen of the 13. Her most recent appearance this year was with Noise Performance House, a Penang based Chinese Theatre Group.
Grayden Goon graduated from UCSI University of Kuala Lumpur, with a honours degree in English Language and Communication. During her period of study, she was actively involved in club activities of Performing Arts Guild of UCSI in various artistic performances as director, playwright, stage manager and actor. She returned to Penang in 2013 for her internship with penangpac while working as a surtitle translator/backstage/wardrobe manager for penangpac’s Penang Hokkien Drama, , and as a stage manager for aside from winning a Festival Director’s Award for the script she wrote. Later, she went on to working full time at penangpac as Box Office cum Front-of-House Executive. In 2014, she reprised her role in the re-stage of in klpac. Currently, she is involved in the re-stage of by Reka Art Space, which is her very first attempt in physical theatre.

Since 1993, I have been actively involved in Penang’s arts and cultural activities; acting variously as festival curator, producer, director, actress, programme manager and videographer. As a theatre director, I favour devising issue-oriented one of the youth directors representing Malaysia at the International Exchange project entitled Contacting the World 2004 in Manchester, England. I worked with the NGO Arts-ED from 2001-2004 and administrated the Arts in Heritage Education Programme, “Anak-anak Kota”, aimed at using the arts as a creative education tool to empower young people to explore and discover their cultural and historical identities in a diverse , ‘living and changing’ heritage environment. I was also the former manager of Penang Heritage Trust. Since 2008, I have also been active in many projects documenting the traditional performing arts and trades in Penang and training of volunteered guides for the George Town World Heritage Site. I co-founded Ombak Ombak ArtStudio with a group of artists. Ombak Ombak ArtStudio is an artist collective that promotes community theatre They have produced more than 30 shows and toured around Penang for various communities. As an actress, I have worked with several established directors. I worked with Ms. Janet Pillai, one of the pioneer directors of Children Theatre in Malaysia; Chee Sek Thim on a solo performance A Modern Woman Called Ang Tau Mui to celebrate the International Women’s Day in 2011, Sandpit in 2012 and Pearls for the Picking in 2013. I was also selected to perform White Rabbit, Red Rabbit in 2014, the play was scripted by award winning Iranian playwright, Nassim Soleimanpour. I was last seen onstage in a play directed by award-winning director, Saw Teong Hin, in You Mean The World To Me, staged in George Town Festival 2014.
